Upcoming Review: Julie vs Julia

Reviews

I am so excited to see Julie vs Julia. Nichole told me it is a blockbuster action flick where Julia Roberts takes on Julie Andrews in an all out explosive death match. Should be amazing.

Movie Review: The Proposal

Reviews

The Proposal is an alleged comedy/romance staring Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds. They should be ashamed of themselves.

I imagine the screenwriter typing in the Title of the film and the names of the starring actors, which triggers Microsoft’s Clippy to chime in with “Excuse me, it seems like you are writing a b grade romantic comedy? Would you like to use one of our templates?” The writer smiled inwardly and clicked “Yes”, also saying it outloud. To say this movie is formulaic is an insult to the creative and elegant formulas out there.

Not that it matters, but Bullock plays an editor who is demanding and hard to please. She forces Reynolds, her personal secretary, to marry her so she can stay in the country. They fall in love, I guess. I’m not really sure. I lost the ability to discern plot after watching Sandra bullock crunk dance in the Alaskan wilderness as Betty white looked on, praising the gods of nature wearing ceremonial feathers. If that image doesn’t scar you then perhaps you specifically were the target audiance for this film. For the sake of the rest of humanity, I won’t belabor the point any longer except to say this movie is a bad trip to old country buffet. You weren’t expecting much, and that’s what you got- only it was more stale and less fresh than you thought possible, made all the more nausiating by the sounds of the mouthbreathers sitting around you audibly enjoing the faire.

Oscar from the office was in this movie and was hillarious. I hope he doesn’t fall into the wrong crowd.

Movie Review: Public Enemies

Reviews

Just finished watching Public Enemies. Here are my thoughts on the film. The cinematography was excellent. You really felt that the movie was large enough to capture the personalities it contained. Depp was fantastic as always, Bale not so much. I could be a bit biased- I’m getting really tired of Christian Bale. The sets and wardrobe were probably my favorite part of the film. You felt like you were in the time period watching the whole thing play out on news reels at the local picture show.

Now for the Crushing Criticism.

The movie billed itself as the story of Dillinger, not some fedora and trenchcoat bulletfest. As such, you should expect many dramatic elements and moments set aside for charachter development. One problem, all the interpersonal interaction is fiction. Usually fictional elements of a story are used to make a film more exciting. This does just the opposite. I feel somewhat slighted that I only saw two of the dozens of robberies that actually occured and dozens of formative romantic incidents that never happened. More pew pew less boo hoo, and if Dillenger was really a master thief and thug, don’t fictionalize him into a misunderstood loverboy.
